DIY Steps to Pest Control

1. Prevention.

Stopping pests from getting inside in the first place is the best way to keep them in check. Make sure your home is airtight; seal cracks and holes both inside and outside the home to limit means of entry, including entry points for pipes and utilities. Keep attics and storage spaces dry and well ventilated (a dehumidifier comes in handy!). Store garbage in sealed containers and be sure to put out your trash on the appropriate day!

2. Cultural/Sanitation.

Cleaning your home regularly goes a long way to helping manage pests! Sweeping, mopping, and wiping down surfaces helps remove debris and other attractants that may be causing pests to target your home. Decluttering closets and storage areas will help eliminate harborage areas. Drains should be cleaned and cleared regularly to help prevent flies. A lot of household cleaners also have the added benefit of treating insects; two birds with one stone!

3. Physical/Mechanical.

For larger pests such as rodents and birds, a more robust approach may be necessary. Wire mesh can help stop these pests from entering your home; just remember that mice only need a gap the size of a dime! Check rafter feet for signs of nests and remove them as soon as possible; these can be sources of mites and other biting pests.

4. Chemical.

As a last resort, pesticides may be necessary. Be sure to read the label on any pest product you purchase; it can be the difference between a successful treatment and an ongoing issue.
