COCKROACHES
FUN FACT: Cockroaches give off a “musty” or “oily” smell. If you have a clean house but still smell mildew, you might have a roach infestation.
Recognising
Cockroach Species
American Cockroach
(aka palmetto bug, wood roach, etc.)
- Red to dark-brown
- Up to 2” in length
- Adults have a yellow figure eight pattern on their heads
German Cockroach
- Most common roach (worldwide)
- 5/8” or less in length
- Light brown, with two black stripes along their backs.
Hazards
The dust created by cast-off cockroach skins, dead bodies and droppings can aggravate allergies, especially in children and sensitive individuals.
Signs of an Infestation
Daytime sightings: Cockroaches are nocturnal, so seeing them during daylight hours could indicate an infestation. American cockroaches are typically found outside, but they may enter the home from outside breeding sites. The German cockroach is usually found in the kitchen and bathroom, although it may be found throughout the home.
Droppings: Small, dark, pepper-like fecal matter in drawers, cupboards, under sinks, or along walls and corners where cockroaches travel regularly
Egg cases: Small, brown, purse-shaped capsules about 8mm long found in warm, hidden areas – each case can contain up to 50 eggs
Treatment:
Bermuda Pest Control offers both spraying and baiting services for control of both species of cockroaches.
